Is your diet depressing?

Is your diet depressing?

Losing weight can put anyone in a good mood. However, experts are now finding that the type of diet we follow can determine whether this good humor lasts or if it disappears faster than the extra pounds.

Many people may find a low-carb diet, but until the new study by Australian researcher Grant D. Brinkworth, PhD, and colleagues, its psychological impact on long term was still unclear.

Of their 106 overweight volunteers, 55 were put on a low-carb, high-fat diet, while 51 were placed on the opposite combination, low-fat and high-carb. Over the course of a year, weight loss and mood were assessed.

The two groups lost an average of 15 kilos, which gives no diet an obvious advantage in terms of weight loss. However, the mood was a very different story.

Although both showed improvement after eight weeks, only those on a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet experienced lasting improvement in their mood. Those on a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet have returned to their original mood.

“This result suggests that certain aspects of the low-carbohydrate diet may have had negative effects on mood which, over the course of a year, canceled out the positive effects of weight loss”, the researchers wrote in Archives of Internal Medicine .

Although more research is needed, the team thinks this could be attributed to the effect of protein and fat on serotonin levels and the difficulty of adhering to a low-structured diet carbohydrate content in social situations.
