Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: Are treatments beneficial after plastic surgery?

You may have heard that some cosmetic surgery patients are prescribed sessions in a hyperbaric chamber after their operation, as this can increase the flow of oxygen, possibly helping to reduce swelling and speed up recovery time. However, this is not the post-op standard.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is a treatment in which compressed oxygen helps speed recovery and is usually prescribed for specific diseases and conditions, such as air embolism.

Although this treatment is believed to accelerate healing, there is no medical evidence to support its use after cosmetic surgery.

In addition, HBOT is an expensive treatment , and this is simply not the standard of care for recovery in plastic surgery.

It can even be risky if a patient is taking certain medications or has a history of conditions considered to be contraindications.
