Can chemical peels prevent cancer?

Can chemical peels prevent cancer?

A daily chemical peel, such as that with glycolic acid or salicylic acid, can help prevent fine lines or breakouts, but a deeper peel can have deeper potential.

A fascinating study published in the Archives of Dermatology a compared the results of a 30% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel, CO2 resurfacing and a fluorouracil topical cream to treat precancerous skin lesions.

After three months, all patients saw a reduction in the number of actinic keratosis lesions, but those who received TCA peels showed a “significantly lower” reduction in the number of 40 skin cancers.

Although the study shows that TCA peels are effective in treating skin cancers other than melanoma, their treatment would require more treatment aggressive.

Those used in the study need a maximum of two weeks to recover and the outermost layers of the skin will likely be lost for up to three days.
